ISIMILA STONE AGE SITE
Isimila is a historical site located in Iringa region central Tanzania, its one among attraction decorate Iringa town. People habited this site since stone age this is provided with discovery of stone age tools and cultural Isimila people’s cloths in 1951 which are believed to exist from 300 000 to 400 000 years BC, Tools found in Isimila canyon that is divided into two include spears and slingshot that were used for hunting, the second canyon has amazing pillars.
Isimila site is also equipped with a hammer used for the preparation of other tools and axes used to break bones, shades and knives.
Inside the area, the skulls and bones were seen; the bones that were found corresponded to the current giraffe, but are giraffe with short neck.
This large rock northeast of town is where Chief Mkwawa meditated and where he learned that the Germans were after him. Its name, gangilonga, means ‘talking stone’ in Hehe, possibly because the chief’s scouts communicated the movement of German troops from here. It’s an easy climb to the top, with views over town. IGELEKE ROCK PAINTINGS
A large prehistoric frieze, similar in style to the Kondoa rock paintings, located at a spectacular site on the edge of town just west of the Dodoma road. The ochre drawings depict human figures, an elephant, jumping eland and giraffe hiding in long grass. It’s an easy and worthwhile excursion from town involving a short but steep walk from the car park. Our guide can be arranged on site (about Tsh10,000 per group) or in advance with Iringa-based tour operators.
KALENGA MKWAWA MUSEUM
Kalenga Museum is located 12km from Iringa town situated along the Highway of Ruaha national park(118km) . This museum established since 1954 by the British colonial Government and acquire national position in 1997 when became national museum due to its importance to our national history especially independence movement.
